Description:
|
Science and technology affect nearly every aspect of our lives, yet many of us don't know enough about these topics to be able to talk with each other, form opinions or participate in decision-making either personally or at a governmental level. Beyond Fact, a partnership between Multnomah County Library and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, presents a new series of book discussion groups led by OMSI educators and scientists designed to inform, engage and enlighten participants in four different science themes.
Read "The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic--and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World" by Steven Johnson. In 1854, London is emerging as one of the first modern cities in the world. Lacking the infrastructure-garbage removal, clean water, sewers-necessary to support its rapidly expanding population, the city becomes a breeding ground for a terrifying disease and a physician and a local curate are spurred to action to solve the most pressing medical riddle of their time.
Pick up a copy of the book at the information desk after you register.
Beyond Fact is made possible through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
